Industry
- We can probably all agree that to some extent, advertising is annoying. But it doesn't have to be that way. But consumers are not so sure about giving out more information that will allow advertisers to be less annoying. A big reason for this? One of our the regular things we bemoan here: lack of trust.
-
- Speaking of lack of trust, the Push-Up Muscle Shirt might make you wonder.
- Marketers are always looking for legitimacy, and that includes in the C-suite. Here are 5 skills that marketers need to gain a seat in the boardroom. Warning: numbers are involved.
- If you want to break into digital marketing, there are two things you need to do first. And they might not be what you think they are.
- Two weeks ago, we mentioned how Comcast might be implementing data caps on its current pricing tiers. Well, it seems that with its new Stream TV service, the company may have found a loophole in Net Neutrality rules. You see, because Stream TV comes through your cable (and not wifi), it won't count against the 300GB data limit.
- After the Paris attacks, online hacktivist group Anonymous declared war on ISIS. It seems that this may be an astute way to attack the group, which is electronically sophisticated enough to have a 24/7 Jihadi Help Desk. I couldn't even get such reliable help at an established company.

Platforms
- Yahoo
-
- Yet another high-level executive departure has people wondering if Marisa Mayer's grand plans for Yahoo are about to implode. To sum up, there's been lots of busy-ness, but not much strategy. Oh, and a $70,000 Wizard of Oz photo shoot for executives.
- Some users of Yahoo Mail were locked out of their accounts after being notified that they couldn't access their mail if they used ad blockers. As if it's not already hard enough to get people to use Yahoo mail. And did you catch the part in the above piece where Mayer kiboshed a $70 million grossing ad on Yahoo Mail's home page because she didn't like the user experience?
-
- The new Google+ has debuted, and it focuses on Communities and Collections. So, it's more about topics that are of common interest than it is about connecting individuals with each other.
- You'll be able to find and stream content within apps — even if you haven't downloaded the app. Just goes to show the ubiquity and importance of apps, and that the Web isn't necessarily the destination we'll send all of our visitors to.
- And one of the apps that Google will now be able to search: Facebook. This is huge. And clearly part of Facebook's strategy to be everyone's destination.
-
- You know how you can mark a relationship as "It's Complicated" on Facebook? Well, Facebook recognizes that complications happen, so it has implemented a feature that allows you to take a break from your ex, thus limiting the amount of content you see from them. It's the other side of ghosting.
- Facebook has made it easier for non-profits to do fundraising directly within Facebook.
- David Marcus, head of messaging products, details how Messenger's AI feature 'M' is still human-driven, but learning all the time.
- Taking a look inside Mark Zuckerberg's plan for the future of Facebook. It's as much about his own leadership style and changes as it is about Facebook's.
-
- Why Twitter killed the count total on its tweet button. Not a wise move, when the button appears alongside other similar buttons with counts. Perhaps it will send users scurrying to the analytics dashboard? Great for publishers, but it does diddly squat for site visitors, who might wish to know how popular a piece is.
- Twitter recently changed the favorite star to a like heart. And now it's experimenting with other emojis.
-
- Ford (my former employer) is using Instagram to create public service messages.
- Finstagrams are in. These are "fake Instagrams" that allow you to show your true self to a select group of friends. Don't try to make sense of it; just go with it.
- Is the next generation of social media the work-related social network? It seems that even the most digitally-savvy are still more comfortable using email and other traditional tools. Slack is making inroads, as this case study with Storyful demonstrates.
Trivia question: What did the Oxford Dictionaries choose as the Word of the Year for 2015? *
Collaborative Economy
- Airbnb has raised another $100 million, just months after its latest round, putting its valuation at $25.5 billion. The company expects $900 million in revenue this year.
- Uber cars are everywhere, so it's a no-brainer to put them to work to map streets with 3D cameras.
- A new feature will allow Uber drivers to pick up riders that happen to be headed in the same direction as them. Will this turn us all into Uber drivers? More importantly, if an Uber driver is headed home and picks up a rider, isn't this kind of the nightmarish situation that Uber has been fighting in various cities with the sexual assault allegations against drivers?
- Analysis of NYC taxi and Uber data reveals some interesting insights, including how Brooklyn hipsters prefer green taxis, the rise of Uber across the boroughs, travel times and much more.
- Not all Uber airport experiences are the same. Here's your guide to Uber rules at 11 airports.
- Lyft is on track to hit $1 billion in revenue, according to its CEO, John Zimmer. So naturally, it needs $500 million in funding.
Audio
- Streaming audio provider Pandora purchased the assets of streaming audio provider Rdio for $75 million. Pandora wants to create an on-demand option that will be more competitive with Apple Music and Spotify.
- What let to the downfall of a first mover like Rdio? It wasn't just its odd spelling, but rather the competition. That's right, Spotify killed the Rdio star.
- Podcast Recommendation of the Week. This week, check out The Virgin Podcast. Each week the Virgin Podcast interviews somebody interesting. It might be a well-known entrepreneur, somebody who’s written a new book, somebody from the world of tech or travel. The main thing is that they’re interesting – and that they’ve got a great story to tell, one we can all learn from. Do you have a podcast recommendation for us? Content / Customer Experience
[Note: this section now includes customer experience-related material, as it reasonably represents the offline version of content marketing.]
- As you begin to develop content, here are 25 nuggets of wisdom to follow. Wonderful advice here that spans writing, social media, selling, audience development and more.
- It might be worth stepping back and asking yourself what you want your content to do. If you don't know what your content is doing, it's hard to position it correctly.
- Content is killing content marketing. There's just too much out there. What works? Relationships.
- Persuasion is hard. Because people don't like making an argument that requires us to put ourselves in the customer's shoes. "Marketing is the empathetic act of telling a story that works, that's true for the person hearing it, that stands up to scrutiny. But marketing is not about merely sharing what you, the marketer believes. It's about what we, the listener, believe."
- Unlocking digital value in customer journeys requires speed and scale, and such value needs to be more than digital versions of analog processes.
- They say to err is human, but to compete is human as well. If you understand the drive behind rivalry, you can get to the heart of so much more.
Privacy / Security / Legal
- Airbnb is being sued for copying a French designer's house for part of its headquarters. Normally, it wouldn't be too suspicious, but she's an Airbnb host who has hosted Airbnb's CEO. And a copy of the photo of her grandmother ended up at Airbnb's version too.
- The 500 most popular apps on Android contain communications functions that have nothing to do with the user experience. Yet half of those capture data that have nothing to do with performance or analytics. Just what are they collecting about you?
- The FTC has pretty clear guidelines when it comes to working with sponsored content. But B2B marketers are woefully ignorant of the FTC's rules of sponsored content.
Measurement / Metrics / Data
- Measuring the results of TV ads may seem like a mystery to some; but tying ad results to business results is a key performance indicator for large companies. The ROI of television advertising.
-
- So it shouldn't be too surprising that brands are willing to rely on the loosest of metrics and screenshots from Snapchat influencers.
- If you don't know what you want for Christmas, IBM's Watson does. The platform is releasing IBM Watson Trend, which uses predictive analytics to determine what will be the most popular items this holiday season. I'm making a list and checking it twice...
- Sometimes you can't rely on data as if they're the gospel; it's a matter of understanding context. How do you understand context? Observe, theorize, test and construct.
- Customer journey analysis is becoming one of the most popular methods to improve conversion rates.
* Answer to the trivia question above:
- The Oxford English Dictionaries chose an emoji as the Word of the Year. That's the "face with tears of joy," in case you didn't recognize it. Other words and expressions that made the 2015 Word of the Year shortlist: Ad blocker, Dark Web, lumbersexual, on fleek, refugee, Brexit, and sharing economy.
When You Have the Time: Essential Watching / Listening / Reading
- For years, Apple followed user-centric design principles. Now, Apple has gone wrong and are giving design a bad name.
- We've now got an entire generation of teenagers that doesn't remember life without smartphones. Me? I still remember rotary phones and dreading calling that kid with all of the 8s and 9s in his phone number — not to mention being tethered to the kitchen phone with a cord.
- Seven chapters on the evolution of photos of your face: The Selfie. How this phenomenon has changed our society.
- All we can say is Facebook should have forced this guy to use their name pronunciation tool.
