We’re all familiar with Patagonia, Method, Warby Parker and Etsy as brands that are using the power of business to address social and environmental problems.
What you may not know is that all these companies are also B Corporations and today Hootsuite is proud to announce that we have joined this growing movement of changemakers using business as a force for good.
B Corporations are a new kind of company seeking a better way to do business. It’s like a LEED or Fair Trade certification, but for a business, not just a building or a bag of coffee. There are currently over 1200 certified B Corporations around the world and Hootsuite will be keeping good company with these values-aligned brands.
Our mission is to transform messages into meaningful relationships, and our values are inherent in everything we do. We help millions of nonprofits and small businesses harness the power of social media through our freemium model. We provide free social media education to thousands of students from colleges & universities to help them gain real world social media skills through our Higher Education program.
We became a B Corp because we were looking for a way to measure our impact and see how we stacked up against other socially conscious companies. When we filled out the B Impact Assessment we found that a lot of the practices we had in place were in line with what other B Corps are doing so it made sense for us to join the growing movement. It also gives us guidance as to what we should pay attention to and shines a light on how we can be a force for good.
Hootsuite’s vision is to revolutionize communication via social media and we have the potential to change the way people around the world interact on a large scale. Being part of the B Corp movement is another lever for us to accelerate this.
I became involved in social media in part because I believe it’s a truly revolutionary form of communication that can change society. My hope is that we also inspire other companies to become B Corps and join the movement.
