How to Search For and Find Coworkers on LinkedIn

People around the world come to LinkedIn daily to strengthen their professional brands, network, and garner insights that help them better do their jobs. Recently, we discovered they’re doing something else: searching for coworkers.

About 30% of members who search for people on LinkedIn view their coworkers’ profiles. Why? Good question! What we’ve heard from members is that the professional information on LinkedIn is more comprehensive and up-to-date than most companies’ intranets, and it’s easier to search for coworkers on LinkedIn — especially if you don’t have their first and last name.

This trend interests us so much that we’re exploring all the ways we can make it even easier for you and other members to find coworkers on LinkedIn — including developing a new app. Today, I want to provide some tips and tricks to help you search for and find coworkers on LinkedIn using our “Advanced Search” feature.

Let’s say you just returned from your company’s annual sales kick off where you met a sharp new sales rep from San Francisco who used to do business development at “Company XYZ.” You want to get her take on a project you’re working on, but you can’t remember her name. Here’s how you can find her on LinkedIn:

First, open the “Advanced Search” page by clicking on “Advanced” to the right of the magnifying glass atop the LinkedIn homepage.

The Advanced Search page will pop up. Here is what it looks like if you have a free membership:

advanced searchFrom this page you can search by things like first and last name, title, current and past company, school, and location (Premium members have several more search options). Remember, you don’t need your coworker’s name to find them on LinkedIn. You can conduct a search based on the information you do know about them:

1. Enter your company’s name (Company ABC) in the “Company” search field, and chose “Current” in the “Current or past” search field just below it. Then enter “Company XYZ” in the “Past Company” search field.

2. Then enter “business development” in the “Keywords” search field (note: the “Keywords” search field will search member profiles for whatever words you want to search for).

Now just hit “Search”! That should do the trick. But if your coworker doesn’t pop up in your search results, here’s another tip: Look at the LinkedIn profile of another coworker who has a similar title, or works on the same team or in the same division as the person you’re trying to find. Now scroll down. There are two sections to the right of their profile called “Others with similar positions at (company name)” and “People also viewed.” Here is what those two sections look like:

people also viewed and others with similar position

These sections, as advertised, show you coworkers with similar titles, and related profiles that people also viewed. Chances are you’ll find the coworker you’re looking for in one of these sections.

I hope these tips and tricks help you find your coworkers on LinkedIn, so you can accomplish more together!
