Who is the average Twitter user?

The Pew Internet Research Project have updated their data that shows who is using Twitter and other social media sites. As we noted earlier today, 23 percent of online U.S. adults are now active on Twitter , up five percentage points on 2013. But who are these people?

According to Pew’s findings, the typical Twitter user continues to be an 18-29 year-old educated minority with a well-paying job, and is slightly more likely to be male than female.

In their study, Pew surveyed 1,597 internet users in the United States aged 18+ and found that 24 percent of men and 21 percent of women use Twitter. Black (27 percent) and Hispanic (25 percent) users are far more likely to use the service than whites (21 percent), and 18-29 year-olds (37 percent) make up more than one-third of all users. 30-49 year-olds account for another 25 percent.

Additionally, Twitter users are typically educated (54 percent have at least some college experience) and hold a pretty decent job (54 percent earn a minimum of $50,000 per annum).
