appFigures 2014 App Store Growth

Mobile reporting platform appFigures has released its latest report, highlighting the growth of three major mobile app stores throughout 2014. The report measured the growth of iOS, Google Play and Amazon during the last calendar year, and found Google’s platform not only closed the gap on Apple in terms of number of published apps, but actually jumped ahead. To end 2014, the Google Play store hit more than 1.43 million available apps, compared to Apple’s 1.21 million.

Google Play also had a big year for developer growth, reaching 388,000 total developers on the platform. As of July 2014, appFigures placed Google Play at just 293,000 developers, indicating a huge jump in the second half of the year. Apple ended the year with 282,000 developers, while the Amazon platform reached 48,000 developers.

While Google Play is growing the fastest, all three platforms experienced growth of at least 50 percent last year (where growth means the percent change from the end of 2013). The Google Play store more than doubled in number of apps in 2014, while the Amazon Appstore experienced around 90 percent growth, and Apple’s iOS grew by almost 60 percent.

In terms of app growth, Business apps experienced the most growth on Apple’s platform in 2014, with more than 128,000 new apps released in the category last year. Following that, Food & Drink and Lifestyle apps rounded out the top three. Over on Google Play, the Games category more than doubled in size in terms of number of available apps.
