Do you think LinkedIn had your personal best interest in mind when they revised how your profile looks or works? Sorry. Think again.

Simply stated, LinkedIn hurt the effectiveness of your profile.

I apologize for being the bearer of this bad news, but I do have some good news. Within 15-20 minutes, you can take these five simple steps to update your new profile so it works just as well as the old one—maybe even better.

Five steps to dramatically improve your new LinkedIn profile

Your profile photo is no longer a large square that is placed way over to the left. It's now a smaller circle (so you may need to crop your photo differently), and it's almost centered on the page. This means your photo is catching more people's attention.

Your Headline is also almost centered and is one of the few sections of your profile that isn't collapsed—which means it has increased importance. This may be the perfect time to revise what I consider to be the most important 120 characters on your profile for search ranking and clarity.

For help with your Headline, download my free, three-page worksheet The Definitive Worksheet to Optimize Your LinkedIn Headline. Be warned that I haven't had time yet to revise the graphics for this worksheet to reflect LinkedIn's new look, but the strategies are still spot on.

Your Intro, a brand new term on LinkedIn (the first approximately 200 characters of Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 2.14.06 PMyour Summary), needs to give the reader your most important information and work in tandem with your 120-character Headline above.

I am partial to including whatever contact information you feel comfortable sharing in your Summary. After that, make the spaces count, because very few people are going to click See more if they haven't found your profile relevant or interesting up to this point. In the past your complete Summary was displayed, but now it's collapsed until the reader clicks See more.

Your first Experience entry is now the only experience entry on your profile that is not collapsed. This means it better be really good because it may be the only one anyone reads.

Again, be warned that the screen shots represent the old profile format.

Your subsequent Experience entries are now collapsed and may no longer be read as frequently as they were with the old profile layout. The critical strategy here is to use all 100 characters of the Experience Title fields to not only display your job title but to also highlight specific skills you used in that job.

The cleanest way to do this is to follow up your title with something like this: (Specializing in ______, ______, ______). Repeat this process for all titles in your Experience section.

In addition to clarity, a further benefit is that the LinkedIn search ranking algorithm gives extra weighting to words included in the Experience Title fields.

It's important to get these profile changes done soon, because you never know how soon the right people will start checking you out.

Navigating networking in today’s landscape can be challenging. Different social networks command unique cadences of communicating and specific etiquette. So what are norms for arguably the most social professionals, social media marketers and community managers? In addition to following best practices for connecting, what are the best ways to keep track of all those connections?

Networking on Social Should Be Approached With an Open Mind

In the same way you would approach networking in person, approach forming relationships online with a genuine attitude and open mind. Take advantage of the open nature of social networks and do your research to find connections that could be mutually beneficial. Mimic the nature of the social channel, i.e.: more casual with Twitter, more formal with LinkedIn.

Find the Best Social Network to Connect With Your Industry

Twitter’s openness is attractive to many social media professionals. It’s the most accessible and affords quick connections at scale. Research Twitter chats and add these events to your calendar. Chats are a great place to engage and meet other professionals, learn and grow your following.

Bridge from Online to In-person Professionally

If you’re lucky enough to be close to social connections geographically, an in-person meet up is inevitable. Ensure you’re both on the same page for what you want to accomplish from meeting. Be sure to utilize that social media connection you already have established and follow up post meeting too.

Use Tools to Keep Track of Connections & Get the Most Value

Dunbar’s Number theorizes people can only maintain 150 social connections. With social networks, that number is often much bigger, so keeping track of the relationships you’ve built can be a challenge. Take advantage of functionality on the social network itself, or invest time in tools like Evernote or Sprout Social to take notes on conversations, remember their birthday or keep track of email or phone number.

How to Handle Haters on Social Media Without Getting Flustered

Haters Back Off is one of my favorite recent Netflix shows. YouTube star Maranda Sings essentially plays herself – a terribly flawed individual hell-bent on fame and fortune, no matter what cost, in the age of YouTube. Two thumbs up.

 

On her way to becoming famous, Miranda has to deal with haters – online, in her family, and in her mind.

Haters gonna hate

So what is a hater? From the urban dictionary:

A person that simply cannot be happy for another person’s success. So rather than be happy they make a point of exposing a flaw in that person.

Hater example:

  • Susan: You know, Kevin from accounting is doing very well. He just bought a house in a very nice part of town.
  • Jane (hater): If he is doing so well why does he drive that ’89 Taurus?

How to Handle Haters on Social Media

As a nonprofit marketer, you are tasked with growing a community of dedicated supporters, while also creating a safe and respectful place for discussion.

As a community manager, you must have a plan for haters.

Here is my 5-phase plan for haters:

1. Have rules for haters

Set expectations for the community by stating clearly what’s ok and what’s not ok.

Your rules (aka social media commenting policy) should have three components:

  1. Set the tone – Encourage lively discussion and invite a variety of differing opinions.
  2. Set expectations – Clearly define the line that must not be crossed.
  3. Consequences – People who repeatedly cross the line will be banned from posting comments.

Here’s an excellent example of a social media comment policy from the CDC:

A clear social media comment policy sets ground rules for your community while also helping moderators know when to delete comments or ban users.

2. Block hater comments

Protect your community from sticks and stones that haters like to throw.

Black, Jewish, LGBT, disability communities, etc. are all-too familiar with hate speech. Set up filters to block hateful or hurtful language from appearing in the first place!

For example, Facebook allows you to block hateful language in your Page settings:

If one of these words is used in a post or comment, it will not appear on your Page.

3. Ban haters

Many haters are repeat offenders. They feel better about themselves by making your nonprofit the bad guy.

Your rules should include a clear policy for banning repeat offenders.

The Humane Society clearly states theirs on Facebook:

“If you repeatedly violate this policy, you will be removed from our page.”Click here to read the rest.
  • You can block haters on Twitter by selecting “Block” in the user actions on their profile.
  • You can ban haters on Facebook by selecting “Ban” after hiding their comment.

4. Let your community deal with haters

Trust your community to moderate themselves. They will often deal with haters in strict but respectful ways.

Their responses to haters can range from simply correcting a fact, or taking part in a lively discussion. When this happens, let your community take the lead.

Your community is far more effective at changing minds (or at least defending your nonprofit) than you are.

5. Turn haters into lovers

Or at least likers.

Someone respectfully offering constructive criticism is not a hater. In many cases, they care as much as you do about the cause, but they have a different opinion.

If you shut down respectful criticism instead of engaging in constructive dialogue, you could turn those people into haters.Instead, use your wisdom to:

  1. Take a breath and come from a positive position.
  2. Actively listen to those who respectfully disagree.
  3. Express appreciation for their comment.
  4. Seek to understand their position.
  5. Quickly take action to correct or resolve the issue, if needed.
